Under the Influence of Flavour: The Wine Discovery Mini Course

Every Wednesday @ Stans Halt Tasting Room: The Roundhouse

The Wine Discovery Mini Course is a journey through flavour in wine and is a superb way to brush up on the basics while tasting beautiful wines. Wine is all about flavour, so in this mini course we look at three types of flavour; Primary fruit driven flavours, Secondary oak induced flavours and Tertiary bottle age flavours. Come and get Under the Influence of great wine with us. We taste fruit driven Sauvignon Blanc, moving to oaked Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz and then bottle aged red wines packed with tertiary flavours.

Deconstructing Sauvignon Blanc

Thursday 11 June

This taste experience is run by our very own wine geek, Guy the sommelier! He will take Guests on a journey through the origins, flavour and South African terroir of Sauvignon Blanc. The grape will be deconstructed into the flavours that we associate with the wine, where Guests can taste and smell greenpepper, asparagus and fresh summer fruits. We will explore wines from around the Cape and understand just how climate and soil can influence the flavour of this wine. Wines to taste include: Bouchard Finlayson, Cederberg, Oak Valley, Paul Cluver, Villiera Bush Vine, Springfield and Cape Point.

Exploring Red blends in South Africa

Thursday 18th June

This wine experience explores great red blends of South Africa and begs the question, just what blends should we be focusing on? Are we better at Bordeaux, Rhone, Cape style or Italian? We shall see! The tasting covers all the major styles of red wine blends, in different regions. Wines to taste include, Glen Carlou Grand Classique, Hartenberg Cabernet Sauvignon / Shiraz, Rustenberg John X Merriman, Remhoogte Aigle Noir, Eben Sadie Sequillo and De Toren Fusion V. Exploring White Blends in South Africa

Thursday 25th June

Like other Great Whites of the ocean, Great White Blends are often misunderstood creatures! In South African white wine blends have increased in popularity, away from the single varietals that we all know and love. In this tasting we will explore the different styles of white blends, from Bordeaux to the Rhone to some plain crazy South African inventions! In this way we can better understand how varietals can blend and compliment each other and just how terroir influences what is in the glass. Wines to taste include, Lammershoek Roulette Blanc, Scali Blanc, Eben Sadie Sequillo, Steenberg, Quoin Rock Oculus, amongst others!

Under the Influence of Altitude

Thursday 2 July

Terroir - the combination between climate and soil influencing the vineyard. We decided to explore this a bit and focus on one particular area of terroir; altitude! South Africa is blessed with sea fronts, valley floors and mountain tops, all holding parcels of vineyard. We have sourced a range of wines from varying altitudes to explore just what height does for a wine. Some of the wines to be explored include, Thelema Riesling, Fairview Semillon, Cederberg Shiraz, De Trafford Merlot, Belfield Cabernet Sauvignon, Fairview Jakkalsfontein Shiraz.
